To make Italian-style mac and cheese, you will need the following ingredients:
- 1 pound of macaroni pasta
- 4 tablespoons of butter
- 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
- 3 cups of milk
- 1 1/2 cups of grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 1/2 cup of grated mozzarella cheese
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Optional: 1/4 cup of chopped fresh basil or parsley for garnish
Instructions:
- Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Once melted, add the flour and stir constantly for about 2 minutes to make a roux.
- Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 3 minutes or until it starts to thicken.
- Remove from heat and add the grated Parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese, salt, and pepper. Stir until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.
- Add the cooked pasta to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is well coated.
- If desired, garnish with chopped basil or parsley.
- Serve and enjoy!
You can also add some Italian sausage or diced bacon to give it a more italian taste.
